FAQs

Is there a cap on Canada study permits?

Yes. Canada has set the target around 408,000 permits for 2026, lower than previous years.

Are graduate students exempt from the cap?

Yes. Master's and doctoral students at public institutions are exempt and no longer need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL).

Has the financial requirement changed?

Yes. Students must demonstrate higher living funds (approx. CAD 22,895+ plus tuition and travel) from September 1, 2025.

How many hours can I work?

Up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions, increased from 20.

Can my family accompany me?

Yes. Spouses can apply for an open work permit, and dependent children can study in Canada.

Do I need a new permit if I change institutions?

Yes. You must apply for and receive a new study permit before beginning studies at a new DLI.

Have PGWP eligibility rules changed?

Earlier proposed changes have been postponed or reversed. Programs previously removed remain eligible until early 2026. Confirm before applying.
